In the early to mid 1800's Sapphire Valley was home to the Georgetown Goldmine. This mine was found at the base of what we now know as Bald Rock. The land that the goldmine sat upon was purchased by a man named J. Francis Hayes and the Toxaway Company in 1896. They constructed a dam in the Long Branch river and created what is now known and enjoyed as Fairfield Lake. The lake is now enjoyed by the girls at Camp Marrie-Wood and the members of the Sapphire Valley Masters Association. In the past however, this was the location of the Fairfield Inn; A luxurious building overlooking the lake that stood for 90 years. A fire in 1986 brought to light that there were some structural flaws in the building and it was torn down later that year. The beautiful views and breath taking scenery that the Inn used to look over is still here today and enjoyed by many.
